Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that is designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.

Trauma impacts all of us differently, and the effects of traumatic events or memories can disrupt our daily functioning including our mood, cognitive abilities, and our ability to work or tend to our interpersonal relationships. If you currently are having challenges with processing traumatic material or healing from difficult life events, think about scheduling an appointment to discuss EMDR here at Old Towne!
Old Towne Counseling now has two clinicians offering EMDR services - otherwise known as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing! EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that is less centered on talking through concerns and issues with your provider, and more focused on processing trauma and minimizing distress associated with traumatic memories through bilateral movement, hand tapping, or audio stimulation. When you focus on a specific traumatic memory or emotion and simultaneously pay attention to the external behavior that is stimulating both sides of your body, the left and right hemispheres in your brain are activated, allowing your brain to reprocess traumatic memories, emotions, and feelings that you have been stuck on in order to promote effective healing.
Intense, emotional pain can take a long time to heal. Often, the impact of a traumatic event or experience can end up blocking the brain’s information processing system - causing prolonged suffering as the ‘emotional wound’ grows. Undergoing EMDR might be beneficial if you have endured trauma that continues to impact your daily thoughts, emotions, behaviors, or overall functioning and you haven’t found the relief you’ve been seeking through regular talk therapy sessions.
