Psychiatric medication in Mechanicsville, King William, the West End, and greater Richmond region: What to expect at your first appointment

The Old Towne Counseling team consists of compassionate staff ready to help you along your mental health journey at any age or stage in life. Starting your journey into psychiatric medication may feel like a big step, and it’s natural to experience a mix of emotions — nervousness, uncertainty, or even hope. Understanding what to expect at your first visit can help ease some anxiety and prepare you for a productive meeting.

Here’s a guide to help you navigate your first psychiatry appointment.

Arriving at the Office

Our Client Care Coordinators will ask you to complete necessary paperwork electronically prior to your appointment. Bringing the following information to your first appointment will provide your prescriber with important context and help your meeting be productive.

-  A list of any current medications (including dosage), or past medications tried

-  Family mental health history

-  Notes on your symptoms and experiences with mental health

-  Questions you want to ask

-  Support from a friend or family member, if you feel comfortable

Initial Assessment

Once your appointment begins one of our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) will perform a verbal assessment of symptoms, usually lasting 60 minutes. This is a chance for them to understand your mental health history and any stressors you may be experiencing. They may ask questions about:

-  Your mood and emotional state

-  Any previous mental health treatments or diagnoses - Lifestyle factors (e.g. sleep, diet, exercise)

It’s best to be honest and open in your responses. This information will help your PMHNP create a treatment plan that suits your needs.

Building a Relationship

Establishing a trusting relationship with your PMHNP is important. They are there to support you, and building rapport can make the process go more smoothly. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about their approach, qualifications, or anything else that’s on your mind. Remember, this is a partnership in your mental health journey.

Treatment Plans and Options

Based on the information you provide, your PMHNP will work collaboratively with you to create a unique treatment plan and determine whether or not medication will be an effective intervention. They will explain the reasoning behind their conclusions and the implications for treatment.

You’ll also explore other treatment options, which could include:

-  Psychotherapy (talk therapy)

-  Lifestyle changes (such as diet and exercise)

-  Support groups or other resources

Next Steps

Before the appointment ends, you’ll discuss next steps. This may include scheduling a follow-up appointment or discussing referrals to other professionals.

Final Thoughts

Your first psychiatry appointment is a significant step toward understanding and managing your mental health. While it may feel daunting, remember that our team of nurse practitioners is here to help you.

Be patient with yourself as you navigate this journey, and trust that you are taking an important step toward well-being.
